Caroline Mary was the oldest of seven children. She was student at St. Patrick’s School for the past five years. In May of 2007, she completed the required national examinations for promotion to 11th grade. Tragically, she died before learning that she passed.
Caroline Mary died because she was poor and because she was female. The electricity in her village was shut off for a week. Because the water pumps don’t work without power, she and her sister were forced to bathe in the local pit well. She slipped and fell into the water. She couldn’t swim. Girls aren’t usually taught to swim-only the boys. By the time her sister returned with help, it was too late.
This January, all of St. Patrick’s students, girls and boys, will learn to swim.
