2007-2008 Soccer Camp Participants

December 27, 2008-January 10, 2009

Over 360 children participated in Dalit Solidarity’s First Annual Soccer Camp last year. Students from twenty different schools attended one of two 4-day camps. 30 girls orphaned in the tsunami traveled over 400 miles to participate in the camp.

This was their first sports camp. For most, it was their first exposure to organized sports. For many, particularly the girls, it was their first time playing soccer.

When the camp was first announced, many of the participating schools weren’t interested in sending the girls. They thought it would be a waste of time and resources. The girls “wouldn’t be interested” and “would never play again.” However, after witnessing the girl’s enthusiastic play and rapid skill development, all the schools promised to permit them to continue playing soccer. Planning began for a community girls’ soccer league-a “first” in our area.

Snacks and lunch are provided each day for all campers. Each camper receives a camp t-shirt. Last year, the girls were given a pair of shorts. This year we hope to provide all campers with shorts in addition to their t-shirts.

The camp is part of our Service Adventours Program. Fourteen volunteers from high schools and universities throughout the US worked as coaches at the camp.

David Brandt, 5-time NCAA Division III National Mean’s Soccer Coach from Messiah College serves as the Honorary Program Chairman. He developed the curriculum for the camp and provides a training session for the coaches prior to their departure for India.
